A Message from Capt. Dee
I never could have imagined as a young school teacher in 1975 that l would be led to a lifelong learning experience on the sea, but here I am 42 years later.
The timeline of my career extends over the last 4 decades. That may sound long, but it doesn’t feel that way! Getting out sailing rejuvenates the soul and keeps even the oldest of “old salts” feeling good. I enjoy the time spent with our guests providing valuable information about the island and being an ambassador for this wonderful place, I have had the good fortune to live in all these years.
Let’s look at a little time capsule leading up to date.
After teaching school for 3 years I decided to try something completely different. I started the first windsurfing school in the USVI in 1978 called “Virgin Surf and Sail” I ran that business until 1987.
My enthusiasm for sailing opened up opportunities to sail boats on delivery’s and term charters. I was also given a job at the St. Croix branch of the Annapolis Sailing School during the off season. I finally had enough sea time to sit for my license.
In 1987 I received a 100 Ton USCG Master License working as a dive boat captain and dive master. I loved diving but I always wanted to get back to sailing.
In 2004 I jumped on the opportunity to run my own sailing business. This was a lifetime dream and goal. I bought Bilinda Charters and renamed the boat ZULU. I am presently living aboard. This is our 15th season.
Please take a look at what we do. I would say that a sail on Zulu is as close as you will get to a day on the water on your own boat. No, we don’t go to Buck Island. We have our own spots that we frequent on the North Shore and our guests are usually very happy to be the only boat at these anchorages.
Myself and my mates have a deep respect for the environment. We believe in climate change and promote research that has proven that sunscreens containing oxibenzone and octinoxate harm the ocean environment. So bring sunscreen that does not contain these chemicals.
I am very proud that we were the first charter boat on the island to discontinue the use of one use plastic water bottles. Bring reusable bottles with you and lets go sailing!!
Fair Winds and following seas,
